I have known Bishop Eneja since he became the Bishop of Enugu here. He was my Bishop but the relationship was something not ordinary because I was not field in the parish at anytime, I was in the public service teaching, heading schools, working in offices until I retired, sooner or later he also retired. I think I can summarize my relationship with His Lordship this way, I have always preached in churches and I think in some of my publications:
(1) That if all of us were like Bishop Eneja, there will be no problems, we will not need the policemen, and we will not need burglary proofs on our doors and windows so he is a model for everybody.
(2) I use him too as a model in society because very often, we blame governors and presidents o all kinds of things, killing people and embezzling money etc but I will everyday even in churches if presidents and governors alone were bad and are good, then the presidents and governors will not be able to do bad things you accuse them of because you are bad as well because if you say that this governor is killing somebody, did you see him killing? You are the person he sends and you do it so you are bad yourself. So all of us are bad, because I was telling people in the church that if everybody were like Bishop Eneja, if he was asked to kill somebody will he kill anybody? So all of us are at fault not only presidents and governors. And so Bishop Eneja therefore remains a model for everybody including Christians, governors, president and everybody.
Frankly, I can say with what I saw and gathered about Bishop Eneja that he exercised himself in hard labours even before he became a Bishop. He is a mode in hard labour and I think everybody realizes that he is a deep spiritual man. One of my preaching, I talked to people about “No Cross, No Crown by Bishop Eneja and also “Daily programme of a fervent Christian” so one can learn everything from Bishop Eneja both from his words, his works and his writings.
One thing I noticed in Bishop Eneja and want to point out is that people have to be instructed on the redemptive suffering; Pope John Paul II was a model in redemptive suffering. You see in all his sufferings and so on, he governed the church effectively and possibly the best administrator. Redemptive suffering has its own value. Bishop Eneja in all his illness that formally strong man is now engaged in redemptive suffering. I am sure the amount of good his suffering is doing for this diocese is incalculable and many people do not see the value of redemptive suffering. So even now in bed, Bishop Eneja is still teaching and instructing people, those who can understand and those who will understand in future.
My prayer for His Lordship is that by the grace of God, he will persevere until the end and then he will receive the crown of glory. You can say of him even now, he has fought the good fight, he has finished the race, and he has kept the faith. The crown is waiting for him. People should learn from him, absolute abandonment to the divine will. Wherever God wants you to stay, stay there. May God be glorified.
