In his twilight years at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Enugu, Bishop Michael Eneja, though physically weakened, demonstrated unwavering faith. Visits to Niger Foundation Specialist Hospital for health concerns, including age-related ailments, became routine. Despite challenges like declining eloquence and mobility, Bishop Eneja maintained his daily routine, blending prayer, meditation, and exercise.
On November 1, 2008, his health prompted admission to Niger Foundation Hospital. On November 14, 2008, at 1:57 pm, news of his passing sent shockwaves through the diocese. The incumbent bishop, Most Rev. Dr. A.O. Gbuji, made the heartbreaking announcement during a diocesan gathering.
A pilgrimage of sorrowful souls converged at Niger Foundation Hospital, where Bishop Eneja's lifeless body was gently placed into the ambulance. Accompanied by over two hundred priests and countless mourners, a solemn procession led his remains to Annunciation Specialist Hospital Mortuary in Emene, Enugu.
To honor Bishop Eneja's legacy, a high-powered delegation from Onitsha Archdiocese pledged support for a dignified burial. The Presbyterium convened, led by Bishop Gbuji, to formalize funeral arrangements. December 5, 2008, was chosen as the day for Bishop Eneja's final journey to eternity.
In the days leading to the burial, requiem masses were celebrated in various dioceses, each highlighting facets of Bishop Eneja's exemplary life. Testimonials underscored his punctuality, unwavering commitment to prayer, reliance on God's will, self-mortification, and genuine availability to his flock.
On December 5, 2008, Bishop Eneja's earthly journey reached its conclusion. Women from Onitsha Archdiocese fulfilled their pledge, ensuring a befitting farewell for a man who had devoted his life to the service of God and humanity. The legacy of Bishop Michael Eneja, a saintly figure, lives on, inspiring those who had the privilege of knowing him.
